With a much anticipated weekend matchup the Cougars were able to prevail and defeat both Santa Clara and CSUN in order to stay undefeated on the season. With their first matchup of the weekend being against the Santa Clara Broncos the Cougars were able to beat them convincingly 13-3 with Phillips stopping 23 of 26 shots in the net. The Cougars were able to spread the scoring out on the scoresheet with 8 different players scoring goals and 13 players recording points in the contest. After coasting to victory against the Broncos the Cougars were preparing for their big rival the CSUN Matadors. Heading into this games against the Matadors there was much anticipation and trash talking to say the least, it definitely didn't disappoint. With both teams feeling each other out the first period ended with the Cougars being ahead by a goal but controlling most of the game. They then went on to score two more in the second and go into the intermission with a 3 - 0 lead. The story of the game for the first two periods of the game had to be the Matadors goalie, he was able to shut down most of the Cougars high quality scoring chances. Not only was the Matadors goalie on his game but so was the Cougars McGrath stopping all of the shots he faced including several odd man rushes and breakaway chances. With the Cougars being known for a 3rd period team they definitely showed it scoring a total of 7 goals in the 3rd period and closing out the game 10-0 getting McGrath his first shutout of the season. Although they were able to close out the game rather strong they will be without the assistance of Howard, Brodetsky, and Miller for the game on Friday against UCSB due to game ejections in the 3rd period. The next opponent for the Cougars is a home and home series against UCSB with the first being at Ice Station Valencia on Friday at 7:30 PM. Come out and support the team!! GO COUGARS!!!!! |

After maintaining a perfect record on the weekend by defeating Hope, University of Wyoming, and Dordt College, the Cougars have stayed undefeated and become the 2010 Clash In The Corn Champions. With the first game being the toughest of them all, the Cougars successfully defeated Hope College in a hard fought battle by a score of 5-3 with the insurance goal coming on the Power Play with 16 seconds remaining in regulation time. This was predicted to be the marquee match-up of the tournament and it definitely did not disappoint. Hope came into this match-up being the top team in the nation where as the Cougars have been trying to make a name for themselves. After this victory, the Cougars are definitely putting themselves on the radar and are making a strong bid for the number 1 ranking in the Pacific conference of the ACHA (results are set to release on Nov. 12). The Cougars were led to victory by newcomer Brian Voogt who posted an impressive 3 goals and Tyler Gilmore who posted 4 assists. The two other goals in the game for the Cougars came from Alex Brodetsky on the Power Play and Todd Hopkins on the Penalty Kill.
After defeating the Flying Dutchmen in the opening game of the tournament, the Cougars then took on the University of Wyoming in a tougher than expected match-up. With the Cougars being favored headed into the game, they were set back early in the first period after defenseman Tyler Gilmore was ejected 10 minutes into the game for a controversial "spearing" penalty. Not only was Gilmore removed from the game and suspended for the following, but the Cougars also were to face a 5 minute major penalty. During this major penalty, Wyoming took advantage and jumped out to an early lead by scoring on the Power Play. Just minutes later the Cougars were faced with another obstacle when forward Alex Jaeger was also ejected from the game for a checking from behind major penalty and assessed a 5 minute major penalty. Although being on the penalty kill for the majority of the first period, the Cougars were able to escape the constant torment, even scoring a short handed goal (Todd Hopkins), his second of the weekend. After going back and forth in the 2nd period, the Cougars would then take off and close out the 2nd period with a 7-3 lead with goals coming by Miller, Skura, Brodetsky, Conroy, and two by Voogt. With a comfortable lead heading into the 3rd period, the Cougars were able to close out the contest by a score of 9-4. Not only was the Cougars offense superb in this outing, but so was the net minder play of Mike Phillips. Phillips was able to let in only 4 goals on 29 shots from the University of Wyoming with several of them coming on the Power Play.
Heading into the Saturday match-up against the hometown Dordt College, the Cougars were sitting comfortably and headed in confident. After already securing the championship by winning the previous two games, the Cougars did not have much to worry about. They also did not want to ruin their undefeated record of the season. With another solid performance from the entire team, they were able to defeat the Blades by a score of 12-1. With this being the third game of the weekend, both goaltenders McGrath and Phillips split the game with Phillips letting in the only goal in the 2nd period, but was able to turn away 9 shots and McGrath all 13 he faced. The scoring was lead by forwards Brian Voogt, Alex Brodetsky, and Andy Jakiel this game. The Cougars have 2 games coming up this weekend. They face Santa Clara on Friday at home and travel down to CSUN to face the Matadors on Saturday. Come out and support the team! GO COUGARS!!!!!! |

What a game it was, but when it was all said and done the Cougars were victorious by a score of 5 - 3! With the opening game of the Clash in the Corn tournament being the most anticipated, it definitely did not disappoint. The entire game was back and forth with Hope striking first about halfway through the 1st period. With the period winding down Tyler Gilmore went down on a breakaway just missing wide to the left and ending the first period with Hope up by one. After the intermission the Cougars came out and were all over the Flying Dutchmen with Alex Brodetsky tipping a shot in from the point by Sam Skura. Hope then came back and scored on the power play taking a 2 - 1 lead about halfway through the 2nd period. After taking another penalty and being down a man the Cougars were on the verge of going down by 2 goals with Hope pressuring them and peppering the goalie. Goalie Mikey McGrath was at his finest though stopping every puck coming his way and after a turnover by Hope Ben Conroy sprung Todd Hopkins loose down the right boards where Hopkins scored a short handed goal from the top of the circle tying the game at 2. Then late in the 2nd period with the Cougars on the power play Tyler Gilmore fed Brian Voogt with a break out pass from deep in the zone where Voogt took it all the way for his first goal of the season on the power play but he wasn't done yet. With the Cougars going into the 2nd intermission with a 3 - 2 lead they were not letting up. Early on in the 3rd period with both teams skating 4 players aside Hope was able to tie the game up at 3 on a goal from a scrum in front of the net. The Cougars were not letting up though, about 30 seconds later Voogt was given another pass through the middle and took it all the way in for his second goal of the game giving COC the lead midway through the 3rd period. From there on out goalie Mikey McGrath was a stud standing on his head making spectacular saves shutting the door on the Flying Dutchmen. With about a minute left in the game and the puck deep in the Cougars zone they were able to draw a penalty on Hope pretty much sealing the deal. Although the Cougars were up by one they added insurance with about 30 seconds left in the 3rd period with another goal by Voogt, 3rd of the game (hat trick), with assists going to Andy Jakiel and Tyler Gilmore. The Cougars then closed out the rest of the game mistake free securing the victory! Great job COUGARS!!!!! They take on University of Wyoming tomorrow and Dordt College on Saturday. Stay tuned for updates! |
